When I quit my job in the Middle East to start my backpacking journey, aside from the other reasons and lies I was telling myself and people around me about why I wanted to leave my corporate life, I actually left because I just wanted to have more time to understand myself, to love me and just to be with myself!
Unexpectedly, during a few days exploring Luang Prabang, Laos, I met Jonathan!
A lot of foreigners come to find a Filipina to love and care for them. we know a lot of foreigners come to take advantage of Filipina girls (that hurts me to, it is sick and I dream of the day that changes). In some cases people will be so vocal about it, that it can be uncomfortable.
I understand that it would be common to assume that I would be here due to a Filipina. I will always take time to respond to people who make those comments in a positive way.
(It helped that I attended an All Girls Catholic High School so there was very little temptation.) But when I finally started dating my non-Filipino boyfriend, there were a few things he needed to know:1. One cultural value that Filipinos pride themselves on is "close family ties." Filipino families — and generally speaking, most Asian families — are very close. So if you get invited to a party and everyone is drunk and singing, I'm sorry, but you cannot escape the mic. They think they can slowly pressure me and break me down, but Filipinas are raised to believe sex is for someone you intend to spend the rest of your lives with.
Most Filipinas (female of "Filipino"), such as myself, tend to wait until our late teens or early 20s to start dating because we've been raised with the belief that family and our studies come first. A Filipino family is bound to own at least one (because different ones have different songs, duh). Guys who showed interest in dating me saw it a challenge when they found out I'm saving myself for marriage. Here I am a 26yr old foreigner semi-fluent in Bisaya, basic knowledge of Tagalog who is living in the Philippines. I have met some Filipinas that right away make me wish I had the privilege of saying… It helps me inspire some positive thinking in the minds of people I look up to… I have found over the course of my time in the Philippines I have pushed away any opportunity I may have had to date a Filipina and to get close to a Filipina. In fact just a few days ago a foreigner told me: “You must be a big hit with the ladies. Get a few beers in you and I bet all the stories will come out.” Stories of a 26yr old who even though maybe lonely in that aspect of his life, just doesn’t agree with people focusing on being with girls here as being the best part of the Philippines. I completely understand why foreigners talk about the girls here so much, because they are amazing, and yes chances are you will get a lot of attention from them if you are a nice guy. One day we were hanging out looking for ingredients to make some food. Now if you are Filipino reading this I want you to stop here and think: If you didn’t know me, had no clue what I was doing here in the Philippines. What would your guess be as to how I got here, and why I choose to stay here? We headed to the market in Cebu to pick up fresh vegetables.Yes, there are perhaps some Filipinas who have this reason but not in most cases!I was already travelling on my own long before I met Jonathan (well, I’ve met Jonathan while travelling! Jonathan and I are both long-term travellers and us living and settling down in the UK couldn’t be further from our minds.
