“She has never been in better shape,” ESPN reports.SEATTLE – It’s not every day that the best players on two teams in the same town announce they’re dating. “So even though I understand there are people who think I should have done it sooner, it wasn’t right for me at the time. “Of course, I have a whole journey — everybody does in life,” she said. I don’t like to be, not necessarily ‘gossiped’ about but the topic of conversations.” Bird’s relationship with Rapinoe, who has long been out and an activist, was not the reason she came out now, she said.“It’s happening when it’s happening because that’s what feels right,” Bird said.“So even though I understand there are people who think I should have done it sooner, it wasn’t right for me at the time. It’s my journey.” She had been “on the verge” of coming out publicly for some time, she added.
Once she'd figured out her sexuality, it became a "non-issue" for her and if someone didn't like it, she would've dropped them from her life. Bird even revealed that she almost came out at last year's Rio Olympic Games while filling out "25 things you don't know about Olympians" questionnaire.
“So even though I understand there are people who think I should have done it sooner, it wasn’t right for me at the time. It’s my journey.” While some speculate Rapinoe’s involvement within the LGBTQ community prompted Bird to speak out, the Long Island native says she’s thought about coming out for some time. “Megan feels really passionately about things,” Bird said of Rapinoe, who took part in Colin Kaepernick’s national anthem protest over racial inequality.
Ahead of the Rio Games, Bird filled out a 25-question survey, “25 things you don’t know about Olympians,” disclosing her sexual preference as the 25th answer. “I just never felt that calling, if that’s the right word.
And she won Naismith Award as college player of the year.
She is also the winner of Nancy Lieberman Award as the top point guard in the country.
